DAVID CHAPMAN was born in 1944 in Potter's Bar, Middlesex. He attended the Stationers' Company's School and then Hornsey College of Art, where he studied Fine Art for three years. In the summer of 1964 he was a founding editor of the poetry magazine THE IRON FLUTE. After being released from hospital, Chapman said England's most significant contemporary contribution to literature is its Children's Comics.

The first edition of WITHDRAWAL, sponsored by The Rt. Hon. Jonathan Guinness under the imprint PROUDSTAGE BOOKS, was published in 1965 when David Chapman was 20 years old. He passed away from an overdose of drugs in 1976 at the age of 32.

No writings by this brilliant poet were published besides his wonderful poetry magazine and this book. It is therefore a privilege for THE ZERO PRESS to reprint WITHDRAWAL in his memory.
